Did you know that here are nearly 6,000 kids from Military?

Families in Rhode Island, and that there are military families

in every town in Rhode Island?

When military deployments happen in our state, these military

families have to cope with stressors that most of us can't even

imagine. Military kids are our neighbors, our teammates, our

students, patients, clients and friends.

To reach out to these military youth and families, Operation: Military Kids was formed. Nationally, it is a partnership of U.S. Army Child & Youth Services and the 4-H Youth Development Project.

In Rhode Island, it is a program of The University of Rhode Island' s College of the Environment and Life Sciences' Cooperative Extension 4-H program.

To help you better understand the impact of the deployment cycle on military families, youth and the community as a whole, the Rhode Island Operation: Military Kids State Team invites you to attend a free, 2-day-long educational session called Ready, Set, Go!. Space is limited; but the trainings are free and open to all.

This year's training is being held on July 26-27 from 9-5 at the URI Kingston Campus. If you work with kids, Ready, Set, Go! Can help you better serve Rhode Island's military families. Teachers, coaches, counselors, youth program leaders and others who serve families can all benefit from Ready, Set, Go!

STARBASE-Atlantis Geocaching Adventure

This summer STARBASE-Atlantiswill introduce kids to "geocaching" the modern-day treasure hunting game. Using global positioning systems (GPS), kids will navigate their way around the Base hiding and seeking geocaches. Rain or shine, we plan to spend many hours outdoors so we ask that all kids come prepared with appropriate walking shoes, hats, rain gear, and sunblock.

Another feature of our Geocaching Adventure will be to introduce the kids to computer aided design (C.A.D.). Using our ProENGINEER CAD software and 3D modeling printer they will design and manufacture their own "geotrinkets" which can be used as a treasure and planted in a geocache of their own.

Parents are responsible for providing their child with: transportation to and from the STARBASE-Atlantis classroom; food, including lunch, drinks, and snacks; and sunblock as we will often be outside.

Rhode Islandis now an active OMK state! We have hired a Program Coordinator, Pamela Martin. Pamela comes to us with a varied resume: she has been both an active duty soldier and an Army spouse. Pam's duties as Coordinator will make good use of her project management and administrative skills, as well as her background in education. Read a news article about Operation: Military Kids and our new Coordinator at: http://cels.uri.edu/news/nHeroes.aspx

We are still looking for more partner community organizations and would love your input on our planning team. Members of the State team attended a National Ready, Set, Go! Training in December and we ran a successful Hero Pack program this winter.

For more information about RI OMK, please contact the Rhode Island State Program Coordinator Pamela Martin at pmartin@uri.edu or the State 4H Military Liaison Kristina Horan at kstone@etal.uri.edu. Laura Paton, the RI National Guard Youth Coordinator, can offer a wide range of resources and support to youth family members for all branches of military services.
